Advanced Marker Identification and Data Analysis with mastR and smartid
Abstract
This workshop is designed for users who want to learn how to use mastR and smartid for biomarker discovery on transcriptomic data. mastR (Chen et al Bioinformatics 2025, 41(3):btaf114) is an R package enabling automated marker screening across multiple groups, combine results from different differential expression comparisons, and apply filters to reduce background noise from unrelated tissues. With smartid, we’ll explore its TF‐IDF‐based approach to ranking markers, which is particularly useful for identifying genes linked to small or rare populations from imbalanced data.
This workshop will introduce the key workflows of the two packages, look at practical tips, common pitfalls, including a few examples for using of these tools. By the end of the session, participants should be able to run both packages confidently and know how to integrate their results into a broader analysis workflow.
